Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972 on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. In her early years, DuVernay's Aunt Denise inspired her love of the arts and her creative side. DuVernay worked as a night nurse to allow her aunt the time she needed during the day for the love of art, literature and theatre. The aunt introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay discovered a love for it. DuVernay was trained by her mother to understand that art can be used to promote activism. DuVernay had her mother who was conscious of her social status and taught her how she could use the arts to find a way to express her feelings. While DuVernay was raised in Compton with her family, she was a summer resident with her family in Lowndes County Alabama where her dad's family was a part of the same for several generations. DuVernay's dad recalled the marches for civil rights over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the nearby town of Selma, Alabama. DuVernay's summers spent in Selma, Alabama was the inspiration she used to produce a film on The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduating she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she was awarded certificates in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for the field of broadcast journalism while a student. She started working as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being commissioned to look over the residence of one of the members of the jury as well as examine their junk. The jury member was unhappy with her journalism duties, and decided to change to the business of public relations. DuVernay got her first job as a publicity specialist in small production studios right following her college. Then she founded The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. Her agency launched a number different lifestyle and promotional networks such as Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
