Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on the 24th of August 1972 on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. In her early years, DuVernay's Aunt Denise inspired her love of artistic expression and creative thinking. Aunt Denise worked the night shift as a nurse so she could follow her passion of theater and literature in the daytime. DuVernay liked the film West Side Story, which she taught her. DuVernay discovered through her example that art was a vehicle for activism. DuVernay had her mother who was conscious of her social status and taught her how to use the arts as a way to express her feelings. Though DuVernay was raised in Compton and with her extended family, she always spent summers in Lowndes County Alabama where her dad's family was a part of the same for several generations. Her father recalled the civil rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. DuVernay's time in Selma, Alabama led her later on to produce a film on Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and was awarded qualifications in English and African American Studies. While she was still an undergraduate student DuVernay started to become interested in producing to television journalism. Her first job was as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned the task of watching the home and looking through the garbage of one of members of the juries. Her duties left her unhappy in journalism, so she decided to pursue a career in the public relations business. DuVernay began her career as a junior assistant to publicity at a small film studio, right after graduating from the college. Then she founded The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. In addition, she started various lifestyle networks and promotions including The Urban Beauty Collective.
